UCLA Aftercare Research Program in Los Angeles: Comprehensive Care UCLA Aftercare Research Program in Los Angeles: Comprehensive Care

The UCLA Aftercare Research Program functions as a combined clinical and research effort housed in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, with a specialization in aiding people with schizophrenia and related illnesses in the early phases of their condition. For more than 40 years, our committed treatment staff has offered free support to young adult participants, the majority of whom are in their late adolescence or early twenties (eligibility spans ages 18 to 45). Our main objective is to help patients navigate the challenging initial years after psychosis begins, effectively managing their condition and assisting them in regaining their footing.

Mission

The UCLA Aftercare Research Program serves as a collaborative clinical and research initiative within the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, focusing on supporting individuals with schizophrenia and associated conditions during the initial stages of their disorder. Over the past four decades, our dedicated care team has delivered no-cost assistance to young adults, primarily those in their late teens or early adulthood (individuals aged 18 to 45 qualify). Our key goal is to guide patients through the difficult early period following the emergence of psychosis, while addressing their symptoms and aiding in their recovery and stabilization.

Personal Statements

Early-Stage Schizophrenia Care

The UCLA Aftercare Research Program operates as a unified clinical and research endeavor in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, concentrating on supporting those with schizophrenia and similar disorders at the onset of their illness. Throughout the last four decades, our expert care team has extended complimentary services to young adults, with most being in their late teens or early twenties (participants aged 18 to 45 are welcome). Our central focus is to provide guidance during the demanding first years post-psychosis onset, effectively addressing symptoms and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives.

Program Services Overview

We offer medication oversight, therapeutic counseling, and cognitive enhancement activities as part of our continuous assessment of advanced care for the initial stages of psychotic conditions. Every participant will engage in cognitive exercises aimed at improving focus, recall, and decision-making abilities. Additionally, a 'Bridging Group' session will explore ways to apply these skills in professional or educational settings. Approximately half of the participants will join a home-based aerobic fitness routine, involving about two and a half hours of physical activity weekly, while the remaining participants will take part in sessions focused on developing healthy lifestyle practices.
